In His Own Right: The Solo Success of Rob Thomas
Singer-songwriter Rob Thomas is known for his vocals in the alternative rock band Matchbox 20, as well as a high-profile solo music career. He is a former bandmember of Tabitha's Secret. Thomas is the recipient of three Grammy Awards and has collaborated with noted musical talents such as Carlos Santana, Willie Nelson, Marc Anthony and Mick Jagger on a variety of recording projects.
Thomas was born Robert Kelly Thomas on Feb. 14, 1972, on an army base in Landstuhl, Germany. Following his parents' divorce, Thomas was moved to the U.S. and spent his childhood in South Carolina and Florida. At the age of 17, Thomas dropped out of high school to pursue a career in music. Landing in Orlando, Florida in 1993, Thomas joined the band Tabitha's Secret.
Just two years later, events that would eventually break up Tabitha's Secret were set in motion when Matt Serletic of Atlantic Records approached members of the band to suggest a long-term record deal. Bandmembers Jay Stanley and John Goff were not interested, but Thomas, Brian Yale (bass guitar) and Paul Doucette (drums) were, and shortly thereafter Stanley and Goff were asked to leave the band. The three remaining members signed with Atlantic and accepted Adam Gaynor (rhythm) and Kyle Cook (lead guitar) into the newly-named Matchbox 20, signing with Atlantic on a two-record deal. Matchbox 20 exploded onto the music scene with the 1996 album Yourself or Someone Like You, which boasted five U.S. hit singles and sold more than twelve million copies nationally.
Immediately following the release of the platinum album, John Goff sued Matchbox 20, claiming rights to the single "3AM", which Tabitha's Secret had performed and received payment for while Thomas, Yale and Doucette were still with the band. The lawsuit was not settled until 2000.
The suit didn't slow Thomas down. As the fame of his band grew, Thomas' talents as a songwriter earned the attention of prominent names in the record industry. In 1999, Thomas wrote and recorded "Smooth," with music legend Carlos Santana playing guitar. Thomas won three Grammy Awards for the single. He also worked with Mick Jagger, Willie Nelson and others on various projects which would eventually amount to more than 75 million records sold to Thomas' credit. Thomas was inducted into the South Carolina Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame in 2001 and was honored with the Songwriters Hall of Fame Starlight Award in 2004.
Thomas pursued a solo career in 2005 with the release of ...Something to Be. It was an immediate success, with the track "Lonely No More" reaching Number 6 on the U.S. Billboard Top 100. Later that same year, Thomas performed to benefit hurricane victims in the MTV Katrina Relief Concert.
Today Thomas and wife Marisol, a model, run the Sidewalk Angels Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps those in need in and around America's major cities. The foundation takes its name from the lyrics of Thomas' 2002 single "A New York Christmas," the proceeds of which benefited Blythe Children's Hospital in Valhalla, NY. The charity has also helped Pets Alive, a no-kill animal shelter.
